[edit] Pakistan in the news

  • 2005-12-15: (khilafah.com) PAKISTAN: NATO TROOPS WILL NOT LEAVE, SAYS ISLAMIC LEADER +
    • - The presence of about 1,000 troops of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and northern Pakistan is not for the earthquake relief operations but is part of the alliance's "greater Middle East plan", said the president of the six-party religious alliance Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), Qazi Hussain Ahmed.
    • "NATO was formed to combat Eastern European countries (the former communist bloc in Europe) and now there is no Eastern Europe, so NATO countries have developed an idea of the greater Middle East, which includes Muslim countries from Morocco to Pakistan and NATO wants to contain these countries against what they say is a threat of Islamic governments,” said Qazi Hussein.
    • "Qazi Hussain Ahmed also referred to a recent statement by the American ambassador to Pakistan, Ryan C. Crocker in which he expressed concern over the presence of groups like Jamaatut Dawa, an organisation synonymous with the banned militant group Lashkar-e-Toiba, which is currently very active in relief operations in the earthquake affected areas. "The US ambassador is behaving like a viceroy. He does not have any right to speak on these issues," said Qazi Hussain."
    • "Qazi Hussain maintained that there was no room left to dialogue with government led by Pakistani president General Pervez Musharraf and he is once again trying to gather all the opposition parties on a single plateform to mobilise them against the government."

    • General James ("Jim") L. Jones - who serves both as the highest ranking military officer at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), NATO’s HQ, and as the commander of the United States European Command (EUCOM). He is the first Marine Corps officer to serve in these positions. He said this:
    • "In my personal opinion, NATO will most likely expand again.
    • NATO will be more proactive and more involved in multinational joint operations.
    • It will cooperate more with other international institutions, to include the United Nations.
    • It will become involved in supra-interagency cooperation to face the new threats.
    • Operations such as Pakistan have shown that we are not just about classical warfighting. The Alliance will leverage this ability to produce results in the less-than-war spectrum of operations."
