[edit] Good plan, eh?

It must be noted that this proposed was approved by senior U.S. Department of Defense leaders, including the highest ranking member of the U.S. military, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Lyman Louis Lemnitzer.

[edit] Please approve this, mr. President

It should be repeated that the plan was approved all the way up the chain-of-comand. The proposal was then sent for approval to the Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. Robert McNamara was not amused.

It is also widely reported that John F. Kennedy personally was shocked in horror and got extremely upset by the proposed plan.

There exists no official record, but it is clear that the Northwoods proposal was rejected after being approved all the way up the military chain of command.

[edit] Your a bad man, eh? Go work for NATO

President Kennedy removed General Lyman Lemnitzer as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff shortly after the Northwoods plan was rejected.

General Lyman Lemnitzer was then rewarded/promoted (by his higher-ups, not Kennedy who punished him) and became the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO in January 1963.
