The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), sometimes called North Atlantic Alliance, Atlantic Alliance or the Western Alliance, is an international organisation1 for defence collaboration established in 1949, in support of the North Atlantic Treaty signed in Washington, D.C., on April 4, 1949.

Its other official name is the French equivalent, l'Organisation du Traité de l'Atlantique du Nord (OTAN) and Dutch, Noord-Atlantische Verdrags Organisatie (NAVO)

General James ("Jim") L. Jones - who serves both as the highest ranking military officer at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), NATO’s HQ, and as the commander of the United States European Command (EUCOM) - said this 2006-01-10:

  • "In my personal opinion, NATO will most likely expand again.
  • NATO will be more proactive and more involved in multinational joint operations.
  • It will cooperate more with other international institutions, to include the United Nations.
  • It will become involved in supra-interagency cooperation to face the new threats.
  • Operations such as Pakistan have shown that we are not just about classical warfighting. The Alliance will leverage this ability to produce results in the less-than-war spectrum of operations."

  • 2003-01-15: NATO, Iraq and the German-American Waltz +
    • "In five minutes, President Bush and President Havel redefined NATO’s territory of influence from a focus on Europe to a focus on the Middle East. The new mission would include protecting the alliance from the threats of terrorists and tyrants, and the degree of cooperation on engagement in Iraq would be a measuring stick of the alliance’s identity. Until just days before the summit, General Harald Kujat, the head of the NATO military council, among others, was denying that Iraq was a subject for NATO."
    • "Yet in Prague, not a single ally spoke against this new stated vision statement for NATO, which one commentator at the summit paraphrased as "keep democrats in, tyrants out and terrorists down" as a substitute for NATO’s Cold War mission to "keep the Americans in, the Russians out and the Germans down."
