Lt. General Kiani retired as the DG ISI in April 2006.

General Kiani was known to have no political leaning towards any school of thought and considered to be thoroughbred professional soldier, surely make efforts to uphold professionalism in the agency without expanding its tentacles in any direction. He proved his metal first in different field assignments then as the Director General Military Operations (DGMO) and lately as the corps commander of the vital X corps at Rawalpindi. Known as a hard taskmaster tough in discipline and soldier in and soldier out, General Kiani is expected to give the ISI a shape that is the need of moment. He has not experience of intelligence gathering in his credit in past but he is equipped with sufficient intellect to execute the duty assigned to a soldier, the observers opined. Interestingly General Kiani was also the person who headed the investigations into the recent attempts on President Musharraf’s life.
