I live in the south of France near Saint Tropez and the skies have looked like the pictures here more than a few times. I have noticed this on days where the weather called for no clouds (our climate is like that of southern California, so no clouds means no clouds) and I have watched, while out on 4 hour bike rides, the jet contrails descend and become clouds that block out the sun then seem to rise back up into loose "contrails" again (all very slowly over a period of hours.) Just thought I would pass on what I have seen.
